Use the best quality vodka you can get and good quality straight cranberry juice. For the garnish, squeeze a lime wedge in the pre-chilled glass, drop it in, then pour the stirred-with-ice-and-strained-straight-up drink over it.
The more popular Sling tutti-frutti Cosmopolitan recipe is: 1.5oz lemon or other citrus vodka, 1.25oz. cranberry juice, 1oz. Bols Triple Sec, 0.25 oz. freshly squeezed lime juice, all shaken with ice and strained into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish for the Sling version Cosmopolitan is a flamed orange twist: hold the twist over a flame and twist it to let the flammable oils drip out, catch fire and caramelise, then drop it into the drink. |

This classic version is said to be the West Coast original, having started life as a Bols Triple Sec and cranberry juice flavored vodka-martini served with a lime squeeze.
Most Cosmopolitans these days are made to the East Coast Sling recipe: more lime juice, more cranberry juice and less vodka, which is invariably lemon or other citrus flavor.
Famous variations include the Metropolitan (made with blackcurrant or other berry-flavored vodka) and the Rude Cosmopolitan (made with tequila instead of vodka). Some bartenders also recommend adding a couple of dashes of lime cordial (such as Roses's) and / or orange bitters and / or lemon juice to a Cosmopolitan recipe. |
